When Porsche unveiled the Cayenne coupe back in March, it started with the top and bottom ends of the lineup, showing off the base Cayenne and high-performance Turbo models. We knew that those two models being the only coupes on offer wouldn’t last long, and we were right. Porsche has now announced the Cayenne S coupe, which perfectly slots in between the two already revealed models.
Like the S version of the standard Cayenne, the S coupe uses a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 making 434 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. The S coupe comes with the Sport Chrono package as standard, and Porsche says it will hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds; choosing one of the optional Lightweight Sport packages shaves a tenth off that claim. That puts the S coupe exactly in the middle of the two bookends in performance: the base coupe uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 335 horsepower, while the Turbo coupe has a 541-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. The former hits 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while the latter makes the sprint in 3.7 seconds.
Compared with the regular Cayenne S, the coupe gets a decent amount of additional standard features. Its 20-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, and eight-way adaptive sport seats are all included. As with the other coupe models, a two-place rear-seat layout is standard, but a three-across bench is available. Also like the other coupe models, three different Lightweight Sport packages are available, adding varoius exterior and interior design elements (such as houndstooth seats!), lightweight 22-inch wheels, and a carbon-fiber roof.
Soon, we expect Porsche will reveal a plug-in E-Hybrid version of the coupe, mirroring the hybrid that the standard Cayenne already is offered with. But the Cayenne variants won’t stop there. A Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid is due this year, packing a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with at least 680 horsepower. The coupe will surely be offered with that setup, too. It’s also a sure bet that GTS variants of both Cayenne body styles will show up in the next year or two, offering V-8 power and slotting in between the S and the Turbo.
